In 1997, the Council of European Professional Informatics Societies (CEPIS) created a Foundation ECDL with headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. Since then, the project ECDL (EUROPEAN Computer Driving License) has been the most spread measure for testing computer skills worldwide. ECDL Foundation has successfully delivered certification programmes to over 6 million people throughout 140 countries and in 38 languages. Many public and private companies adopt ECDL/ICDL and make it obligatory when hiring new employees.
