MFA: Bulgaria becomes a regional educational centre of the Francophonie

On October 1, 2012 Assoc. prof. Vikenti Spassov was invited by Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Bulgaria to attend the signing of agreement on locating in Sofia a Bureau of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie for Central and Eastern Europe.
“The longstanding collaboration with the International Organization of La Francophonie has taken a further step”, said the Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov, announced from the MFA.
Mr. Mladenov said this after the signing of agreement on locating in Sofia the Bureau, which will assist and co-ordinate co-operation in South Eastern Europe in the field of Francophone education at university level. Minister Mladenov pointed to the longstanding traditions and strength of Francophone education in Bulgaria, the result of the efforts of an entire community. He expressed the hope that next year more students from third countries (mostly French-speaking countries of North Africa) would be trained in Francophone areas in Bulgarian universities, thanks to this new regional centre.
Professor Bernard Cerquiglini, Executive Director of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie, welcomed the sighing of the agreement, the result of strenuous efforts by the Foreign Ministry and the Bulgarian academic community. Professor Cerquiglini said that the agreement would enablethe dissemination of best practices in teaching French language, in the development of human resources and in the mobility of students and teachers.
The signing ceremony was attended by ambassadors and diplomats from the embassies of the member countries of the International Organization of La Francophonie, rectors and professors from Bulgarian universities.
Todor Kableshkov University of Transport is one of the ten universities in Bulgaria that are members of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), in which more than 800 universities from all over the world are members. For six years the university has MSc Programme in Engineering Logistics with language of instruction – French. Mostly foreign students from Algeria, Tunisia, Marocco and Moldova show interest in this MSc Programme.
